I set myself the brief of an alternative illustration for a popular-science magazine, on the exploitation of the oceans and the destruction of natural habitats. The image answers it with a single surreal figure: a great blue whale on a stark white backdrop, its back colonised by chimneys, factory installations, and pipes drawing fluids from its body — industry feeding on the living world it stands on. The palette follows the article's emotional tone; the symbolism carries its urgency.
Machines and living things, and what one does to the other, is the territory my short sci-fi comics live in too — join free on Patreon to read them first, or get in touch about commissions.
